This course explores Uganda’s judicial power, emphasizing its foundation in the people’s authority. It begins with the Supreme Court, the highest appellate body, crucial for constitutional interpretation and national justice. The course covers the Court of Appeal, handling appeals from the High Court, and the High Court, which deals with serious cases and appeals from lower courts. It also examines Magistrates’ Courts, which manage most judicial matters, and explains the roles of different magistrates. Local Council Courts are discussed for their role in resolving customary disputes, aligning with local traditions. The Military Courts are also analyzed for their unique role in maintaining military discipline. The course highlights the structure, function, and case flow in the judicial system, emphasizing its role in upholding the rule of law and its reliance on the people’s empowerment. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of Uganda’s judicial system.
